ELIGIBILITY
The UCHS National Honor Society is open to any 10th, 11th and 12th grade student who has been enrolled at UCHS for at least one semester and meets the standards for qualification. Students may apply in the second semester of the sophomore year, first or second semester of their junior year, or first semester of their senior year. QUALIFICATIONS Membership in the National Honor Society is based upon excellence (see below) in four areas: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Each category is judged independently of the other. To be considered for membership, a student must have a weighted 4.2 GPA. A high scholastic average alone does not automatically guarantee selection. In addition, students must have completed 20 service hours for each semester they have been enrolled at UCHS. For many students, selection as a member of the NHS is the pinnacle of their achievements in high school. This honor, recognized throughout the nation, is both the public recognition of accomplishment and the private commitment to continued excellence on the part of the new member. Selection to NHS is a privilege bestowed upon students by the Faculty of the school, and not considered a right inherent to any student. NHS is more than an honor roll. Each member must demonstrate not only good grades, but also strength in each of the remaining three criteria. Leadership – Although leadership can be interpreted in terms of number of offices a student has held in school or community organization, it is important to recognize that leadership also exists outside elected positions including leadership roles in the classroom and effective participation in positions of responsibility in other activities. A student exercises leadership when he or she: is resourceful in proposing new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions; demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities; exercises positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals and spirit; contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school; is able to delegate responsibilities; inspires positive behavior in others; demonstrates academic imitative; successfully holds school offices or position of responsibility, conducts business effectively and efficiently, demonstrates reliability and dependability; is a leader in the classroom, at work, or in other school or community activities; is dependable in any responsibility accepted. Service – Participates in a variety of service venues. Shows initiative in finding ways to serve others. Character – A person of character demonstrates the following six qualities: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. A student of character: consistently exemplifies positive and desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability); cooperates by complying with all school policies and regulations and codes of student conduct; takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously; demonstrates the highest standards of honesty, academic integrity, and reliability; regularly exhibits courtesy, concern, and respect for others; complies with instructions and rules, and display personal responsibility. |
